Video call for GSoC2021 student candidates and mentors

Hello, GSoC student candidates and mentors!

Let’s find a time to meet on a video call next week. Please mark your availability in this Doodle poll:

This will be the opportunity to meet the mentors, introduce yourselves, discuss project ideas, and anything else you want to know, before the student applications open on March 29.

I look forward to meeting you all!

Hi, is the date/time fixed yet?

There are a few candidates still. I expect Milan will publish a date and time today.

By “candidate” I meant three possible date-and-times, not people :).

Just confirming, this is ET and not EDT right? The Daylight saving thing is a bit confusing

It’s confusing to me as well! We’re currently observing daylight savings in the US, so ET == EDT.

2pm ET == 6pm UTC

I just use terms like Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern, and they mean the current time zone (whether daylight or winter).

Same! ET

It won’t hurt to include the time for UTC to make it unambitious in the future. Also, you just reminded me that the US already started using daylight savings while Europe hasn’t yet, must be more careful for the next week to not mess up timezone calculations in my head and miss meetings .

Got it. So basically UTC -4:00 currently. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Good point, I agree, let’s use UTC going forward.

Hi Everyone,

It’s late for GSoC 2021 but for any of you looking for a challenging open-source project in the Fortran space may want to look at the Fortran 2003 feature of parameterized derived type (PDT) and the issues with its current implementation in GCC/gfortran.

Please see this thread. Unfortunately this feature has been orphaned and it’s up for grabs to anyone willing to volunteer their contributions.

PDT facility has apparently proven rather difficult to implement and it does appear to be a road “less traveled” in Fortran compilers but it is a useful feature for quite a few situations in scientific and technical computing.

If this catches any of your interest, please do post your thought(s) and/or link(s) here and one or more readers will be keen to assist in many ways to work with the GCC community toward gfortran enhancement.

Thanks,
