What is a Fortran programmer called?

I’m new here. I just wonder what a Fortran programmer is called. In Python, we are called Pythonistas. Here? Fortraner? Fortranaut?

I really like “Fortranaut” but I didn’t find many mentions of this term. Fortranaut plays on the idea of Fortran’s historical dominance in aerospace. It implies we are piloting a massive, serious, powerful machine to the stars and beyond.

In Armenia, they would probably be named “Fortranian” . You are free to choose your own monicker.

Welcome to the Discourse @jabuci !

If you search “fortraner” and “fortranaut” here, you will find more than 50 occurrences for the first term and only two for the second: your post and a post of mine. In one of my page, I had written this Issues section:

Issues
Fortranauts: “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here”
Houston: “Well, it’s just a hack, don’t expect full support dudes!”
Fortranauts: “…?”
More seriously, if you have a problem, you can post an Issue here or in the Fortran Discourse. I will try to guide you and help if possible.

But generally I use “fortraner”. Is it because it sounds like Road Runner:bird:? I don’t know, but feel free to use the term you prefer, there is no official one!

Thanks! Road runners are fast, and so is Fortran. The compilation is also super fast. My toy programs (I started to learn a week ago) compile and start just as fast as Python. OK, I think I’ll use both

Admirable, intelligent, charming, handsome, heroic. I believe I speak for us all.

Probably just “scientist”, “mathematician” or “engineer” – ie. mechanical, civil, electrical, or chemical. I don’t think there is a strong identity tied to programming in Fortran, that other programming language communities seem to encourage.

Some would say – 1 What is Fortran?

               2 Is it not dead?
               3 A critically endangered species
               4 Homo numericus
               5 Dad
6 Mum who got a first when dad got a 2-1
               7 Sister
8 Dumber brother as identified by sister
               9 Oxbridge person
10 Someone who writes implicit none on all correspondence

Clearly Fortraner (or “Fort-Runner”, see image in this thread)

Or this one by ChatGPT (“generate an image figuring the Fortran language as a running ostrich”):

I was going to mention these but you beat me to it. I would add that with the wealth of experience and superior intellect of almost all Fortran programmers, they are usually called “Boss”. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

fuddy-duddy

That would be the most accurate, humorous, and kind take!

Fortepiano

A female Fortran programmer could be a Fortress.

The answer I agree with was already given, a few have been worth a grin or two. But perhaps “fortifier” ? Not a lot of words go with “Fortran”. Sort of like trying to rhyme with “orange”. or with “The dangerous silver wolf”.
Not much comes to mind.

Then I would say an F1 → name here ← - based on F1 - Formula 1 and the name of the programming language itself Fortran - Formula Translation.
