Follow-up on FortranCon 2026 – Organization

Dear Fortran Community,

First, I want to sincerely thank everyone for the thoughtful feedback and the positive response to the idea of organizing FortranCon 2026. Your insights are invaluable in shaping the best possible event for the community.

FortranCon 2026 – Organization & Structure

:small_blue_diamond: Organizational Committee (Logistics & Planning)
The logistical and operational organization of FortranCon 2026 will be primarily led by the marketing team at Codee, if you agree, with Rosa Vázquez (Co-founder) and Fani García as the key points of contact. While I will be actively involved, my focus will be more on the technical aspects and collaboration with the community.

Since the event will take place in A Coruña, Spain, we believe it is most efficient to establish a local organizing committee to manage logistics, sponsorships, venue coordination, and execution. Rosa and Fani would serve as reference points for all logistical matters to ensure a smooth and successful event.

:small_blue_diamond: Technical Program & Content
The technical program (talks, workshops, tutorials) should be community-led, ensuring that it reflects the needs and interests of Fortran users. We encourage past FortranCon organizers and the broader Fortran-lang community to take the lead in defining the program structure and speaker selection, while we provide the logistical support needed to make it happen. We can help here, too.

:small_blue_diamond: Hybrid Format & Accessibility
We support a hybrid format and will work to ensure virtual attendees have an engaging experience. We will explore high-quality streaming, interactive Q&A, and networking opportunities to maximize participation. However, if we are unable to secure the necessary resources to provide a high-quality digital experience, the best alternative would be to record the sessions and make them available later on platforms like YouTube. This is still something we need to explore further to find the best balance between quality, accessibility, and available resources.

Next Steps

  • Does anyone know who currently owns the fortrancon.org domain and the FortranCon YouTube channel? Would it be possible to recover them, or should we start fresh?
  • If the community supports the FortranCon 2026 initiative, we will start structuring the logistics committee in Spain while coordinating with the Fortran-lang community for the technical program.

We appreciate your support and look forward to working together to strengthen the Fortran community. Please share your thoughts!

Best regards,
Manuel & The Codee Team

Wouldn’t that be the organisers from that first Fortran conference? Tiziano Müller and Alfio Lazarro?

Probably, it was at the University of Zurich.
Tiziano has a profile on LinkedIn and ResearchGate and is now at HP. We could ask him who owns the domain.

That’s a great idea! In the meantime, while we figure out who owns the domain and whether it can be transferred to the community, we’ve secured fortran-con.org so we can start setting everything up.

If the YouTube channel and domain are eventually transferred, we’ll make sure they are managed in a way that allows multiple community members to have administrative access, ensuring continuity and shared responsibility.

Let’s keep in touch as we move forward! We will be sharing updates and progress with the community. Thank you very much for your collaboration!

I am trying to connect with Tiziano on LinkedIn.

Dear Fortran Lang Community,

Following our previous discussion about bringing back FortranCon in 2026, we would like to propose potential dates for the event and gather your feedback.

Proposed Dates for FortranCon 2026

We are considering holding the conference during one of the following weeks:

  • February 23–27, 2026
  • March 2–6, 2026

These dates were chosen to:
:check_mark: Avoid major HPC and tech events like NVIDIA GTC (which usually happens in mid-March).
:check_mark: Steer clear of significant local holidays (such as Carnival in Galicia, which takes place earlier in February).
:check_mark: Provide a suitable timeframe for a hybrid conference, with both in-person participation in A Coruña, Spain, and virtual attendance.

We Would Love Your Feedback!

  • Do you think these weeks are suitable for the community?
  • Are there any potential conflicts with other important events that we should consider?
  • Do you have alternative dates you believe would be better suited for FortranCon 2026?

We truly appreciate any input from the community to ensure we select the best possible dates for FortranCon 2026. Please feel free to suggest alternative weeks if you believe there are better options.

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Best regards,

Thanks for taking the lead and organizing this event which I’m sure many are looking forward to

A question here: are you planning to do a call for abstracts? a simple call for contribution with only presentations? a mix of presentations + workshops? I guess this will highly depend also on the venue. From my participation in scientific conferences, typically you’ll try to first get some people for a reviewers committee, and then make an open call for abstracts to ensure quality content. I’ve never participated in a programming language centered conference, so I don’t know if the same workflow would work? Maybe a platform for uploading proposals and having some kind of review process before announcing the program would help.

In a different note: I noticed that in the PyPi site, they announce the PyCon event, this idea could be replicated in the fortran-lang page ?

Likewise. I am comfortable with the organisation of scientific conferences, but do not know how much this process (as described by @hkvzjal) deviates from a typical language centred conference or how much it makes sense to adopt (partially or fully) the scientific conference format if it does deviate.
I noticed some scientific Fortran software presented at previous events. If FortranCon 2026 can have that additional scientific or “general” dimension (as also argued for well by @aradi in the previous thread), I’d be able (and willing) to assist with reviews and putting together the technical programme.

Thanks to those who made us aware of this thread…

Just to let you know that our intention was always to continue with the FortranCon conferences and we are hoping to organise the next one for later this year but there are unresolved scheduling issues. We will make the website active again. We are already in contact with the fortran-lang admins and we will invite you as well.

Thanks @alazzaro and @tiziano.mueller!

@manuel.arenaz, why don’t we meet over video with @alazzaro, @tiziano.mueller and others who are interested, and discuss how to collaborate. Given that Alfio and Tiziano plan to continue with FortranCon, they should organize it. I gave you go-ahead above since I thought they are busy and don’t have time for it, but given that’s not the case, they should do it. I apologize for this. However, let’s meet over video to discuss how to best collaborate on this. I just sent you a DM to coordinate.

Hi all, it is great to know that there is a plan to organize FortranCon 2025. Definitely it is a good idea to meet in a video call.

By now I also managed to recover my credentials for the Discourse.
Unfortunately, our Oracle Cloud host where the archive, resp. new FortranCon website was hosted stopped responding at some point. While I bring the new page up, the archive of the past events can already be found here:

It is a public scrape of the original content since we did not want to take out the user supplied data as the old site was hosted at the University of Zurich.
