Come attend the SC23 BoF about Modern Fortran

For those attending SC23 in Denver next week, please consider attending the Birds of a Feather (BoF) “Applications, Libraries, and Tools in Modern Fortran (alt.fortran)” presented by Katherine Rasmussen, Damian Rouson, Brad Richardson, Thomas Clune, Jeff Larkin, Ondřej Čertík, Milan Curcic, and Ronald M. Caplan. Find the details below and on the SC23 event page.

Time: Thursday, 16 November 2023, 12:15pm - 1:15pm MST
Location: 708

Abstract: This BoF provides a forum for Fortran developers to engage with its modern programming features. Fortran continues to play a crucial role in numerous legacy applications, but with features introduced in recent standards, the language also supports modern programming practices and high-performance computing. As Fortran 2023 approaches, this BoF brings together developers from various domains to share experiences and explore the language’s evolving capabilities. After some brief panelist presentations, the session will focus on an interactive discussion where audience members will be encouraged to share their own experiences and ask questions of our panelists.

Great selection of session speakers, and BoF discussion!

Next time, please consider also including a GCC, gfortran representative?

How did the BoF go? For those of us who could not attend, were there slides worth posting here, or will the SC’23 proceedings post slides?

I thought the BoF went great. There was lots of engagement and good discussion. I’m not sure if/how the slides will be made available. @krasmussen might know.

My impressions:

  • ~50 in audience (great turnout IMO)
  • Q&A mainly revolved on the topics of: running Fortran to accelerators; challenges with accelerator- and compiler-specific directives; challenges with recruiting Fortran programmers; whether Fortran is gaining in popularity again.
  • Q&A exceeded session time so the discussion continued during the break.
  • We gave out Fortran books and stickers.
