Back to the Fortran Future II (one-day in-person workshop)

Back to the Fortran Future II is the second in a developing series of Fortran-specific satellite events at the UK’s RSE Conference. The one-day, in-person workshop is free and will take place on Monday 8 September 2025 at the Oculus Centre in Coventry UK. You can register for the satellite event on Luma, here. You can register for the whole RSECon conference here. You do not need to register for the whole conference to register for the satellite event, though you’ll get a LOT more out of your visit if you do register for both.

In the workshop, we will be looking at tangible ways in which the Fortran-based science community can raise the quality of Fortran scientific software and Fortran software engineering practices, e.g., through encouraging the adoption of development tools, such as linters, documenters, package managers, and libraries. Last year, we had participants attend from the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, France and the USA, and across academia, government, industry and other sectors (e.g., open source) including fortran-lang. We are, once again, hoping to have the event facilitated by professional facilitators (subject to funding).

The event is co-organised by Austen Rainer (a.rainer@qub.ac.uk) and Andrew Brown (andrew.brown@qub.ac.uk). Please contact either of us with any general questions you have. Also, we may be able to access travel funding to support attendance. If you would like to explore this option please contact Andrew directly (andrew.brown@qub.ac.uk).

We hope you will join us on 8 September!
