Fortran-lang is now second in Google

Yes I think we should redesign the website in any way that is needed in order to support translations. I can’t lead the project in the next few months, but we can revisit at the end of the summer, I might have more time. Somebody just needs to show a prototype that will work for translations, and then we can split up the work and port the website to it.

fortran-lang.org is now at the bottom of the 9th page in the French Google. It is the first time I find it when searching “Fortran” :tada:

Maybe Google is using a national ranking based on the number of links in the local language. Which would imply that popularizing the work of the community in your own language is important (forums, OS communities, Wikipedia pages, etc.).

On one of my PC, fortran-lang.org is at the top of the third French Google page, a big jump.
Strangely, on the PC I use the most for Fortran programming:

  • it is still on the 8th page in Firefox normal mode,
  • it is at the top of the 3rd page in Private mode.

Maybe it’s because Google is not my main search engine…
Anyway the site is going up like a bubble!

I just highlighted your paragraph above and asked Google to translate it to Greek. It made perfect sense. I think if we reduce usage of words like “it” (and similar) to a minimum and if we are a bit more verbose and literal, then automatic translation is perfectly feasible.

fortran-lang.org is now at the top (2nd position) of the second French Google page, instead of the third page three months ago.

I think it’s just a matter of time, especially if we get the translations going.
