Well I do use it for numbercrunching. Currently I am in coding a Lattice Boltzmann program and I am very much into coarrays, find that fantastic.
And “Modern Fortran explained” helps me a lot.
Since your subject is macroeconimics this might be of interest. At the hotel in Oslo several conferences and meetings took place, but there was mingling in the bar in the evening. I happened to get into a conversation there with an elderly man - american it turned out. He said he was a professor and his subject was input output analysis. Wasn’t Ragnar Frisch and Leontief who were pioneers in that subject, I asked. I am Leontif he said.

Funnily enough but working with mainframes and legacy computing! Fortran is still heavily used.
I use Fortran to develop solvers for modelling of large span lightweight structures like tensile membrane, ETFE cushion and cablenet. I also use Fortran to develop solver for ASRS Rack.
