Using reserved words as variables

I would be surprised to find any code written before 2010 that has survived bug-free since then, and is still able to extract maximum performance on the platforms of today (giving the benefit of the doubt that it did so when originally written).

Actually, the original FFTPACK from 1983 still runs at a very high speed on any modern hardware with a good compiler, such as Intel. There are more such examples.

I think we want all of the following:

• performance
• backwards compatibility (not break things)
• modern tooling and features
• use modern Fortran in libraries like SciPy
