To be super clear: rainbow colormaps are not just subjectively ugly, they distort data and are actually dangerous for scientific representation.
Similar thoughts may apply for discrete color palettes, accompanied by the generic observation that bright pure-rgb colors scattered around in a paper or slideshow really catch the eye and distract the reader from what really matters. There’s a reason if matplotlib (or modern matlab gui, or R, mathematica, Julia… don’t use such colors).
