There is an interesting post by Paul Thomas outlining the history of what now is gfortran: [https://groups.google.com/g/comp.lang.fortran/c/NDE6JKTFbNU/m/BKkb57jKBwAJ](https://groups.google.com/g/comp.lang.fortran/c/NDE6JKTFbNU/m/BKkb57jKBwAJ)

This suggests more like something around 10-15 years for solid f95 support, but I guess the gfortran development is not that straightforward as e.g. for NAG or others.

I just found this announcement from November 13, 2015:

> **[NNSA, national labs team with Nvidia to develop open-source Fortran compiler...](https://www.llnl.gov/article/41756/nnsa-national-labs-team-nvidia-develop-open-source-fortran-compiler-technology)**
>
> The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and its three national labs today announced they have reached an agreement with NVIDIA’s PGI® software to create an open-source Fortran compiler designed for integration...

Which is consistent with your comment. I remember reading it back then, but couldn’t find it recently until now.
