**TL;DR:** we’re proposing an image (see below) that people are welcome to use, or amend as they choose and then use, to subtly and visually promote Fortran.

**The detail:** Some of you may remember when Intel started a marketing campaign around the phrase, “Intel Inside” (which, by the way, [continues to this day](https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/Intel_Inside)). At our first _Back to the Fortran Future_ workshop, in 2024, a participant\* wondered about an equivalent phrase for Fortran. With [FortranFuture](https://www.fortranfuture.net) launching, we’ve been able to revisit the idea. (\* I can’t recall who, and haven’t been able to find out, as I would like to credit them.)

We’re proposing that people might start to use the phrase “… powered by Fortran”, e.g., on their presentation slides, with stickers on their laptop covers, and on their websites, as a subtle visual way to promote Fortran.

We’ve developed the following image as an asset that people might easily use, or amend as they choose; or, of course, you can develop your own.

![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/free1/uploads/fortran_lang/original/2X/3/3ff8d72d82c7f0dc6900e902d845f27db20737c8.png)

A few points to note:

- This image should be sufficiently hi-res to enlarge. The discourse ‘interface’ prevents me from sharing a larger image.
- The image above should have a transparent background to more easily use with other media.
- The typeface used is Benton Book.
- The reason for the lower case “powered”, and for sharing the typeface, is so that you can add a phrase in front, e.g., “Solar physics powered by Fortran”, “Geoscience powered by Fortran”, and so on. You can of course choose whatever colour/s you want for the prefixing phrase.
- We have branding guidelines and assets that we’ll post to the [FortranFuture site](https://www.fortranfuture.net) when we get a good opportunity to do so. This includes an explanation for the miniature pixels at the end, which we prefer to think of as kernels (a word rich in meaning for this community…)
- If the image above is not appropriate for your needs, message me or email me and we can try to help.

Thanks

Austen

I like the idea.
I would suggest to stick to the purple color of the F logo and also include the logo itself.

Should use the Clarendon font.

I agree. The purple and font are very recognisable. Including it in the logo would make the association stronger and would probably make people recognise Fortran in it faster.

I also recommend using the Fortran logo that we created, it’s very recognizable by now. Maybe next to “powered by Fortran”. That way we are all pulling on the same rope, which I think is very important while the community is still small.

Excellent initiative!

A “Fortran inside” logo was proposed in this [post](https://fortran-lang.discourse.group/t/the-difficulties-of-using-fortran-in-scipy/6753/23) three years ago.

But “Powered by Fortran” sounds also good, as the English word _power_ naturally resonates with Fortran. By the way, the power of datacentres is now commonly expressed in MW…

Is this the “official” font? I was wondering that a couple of days ago as I was thinking about a logo for an ODE integrate library.

Edit: You just enabled me to spend my last hour designing the least important thing of the Integrate library lol

Briefly: yes, we thought that “powered” was more active than “inside”. “inside” implies location and is, in a way, static, whilst powered implies force, progress etc.

The “F” logo

The “F” logo was designed by Jacobs William (@jacobwilliams) with the violet color being selected by Milan Curcic (@milancurcic). The design is based after the cover of the original IBM Fortran programmer’s reference manual from 1956. The logo is the letter “F” in a Clarendon BT font on a violet background with rounded edges. Here is a really quick draft thingy I made, I ofc dont have rights for the logo, nor for Clarendon so I used Besley Black. Also I cant upload the png so I had to copy paste the image from gimp so no transparent bg

@Capinol nice, I like it, almost exactly what I was imagining.

The logo itself is released under MIT license: [GitHub - fortran-lang/assets: Assets, artwork and graphics for fortran-lang · GitHub](https://github.com/fortran-lang/assets), so you have the necessary rights. Regarding the Clarendon font, seems like Besley Black is indeed quite close. Otherwise if we wanted at least in the U.S. I think we can legally trace the original shapes and create our own font.

Briefly: I am fine with the “powered by Fortran” image being added to the repo, if that is agreeable to others. If someone wants a png to add into the repo, I can share that direct; or add the image myself, depending on access rights. (I’d like to respond to some of the other comments raised, but have yet to find a good block of time to do so.)

I looked it up, you are right (also in EU in general you can’t do it). I should have known that, being from Czechia myself. However, [Clarendon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarendon_(typeface)) specifically, being from 1840s-1870s is long out of copyright everywhere, including Czechia. So you can trace the original shapes and be safe. Which I thought the font you used did, but it looks a bit different to me than the original Clarendon texts.
