Incredibly slow allocation with jagged arrays

Wow. Very nice work. I’m retired now but did CFD and later FEM related work for about 40 years. Amazing how far the discipline has come from when I started which was mostly full-potential, Euler, and some very early Navier-Stokes solvers. One of the pioneers in grid generation, Joe Thompson, is a former teacher and then boss for a few years. I still find it somewhat amazing (but then maybe not considering the complexity of the problem) that grid generation is still the driver for time to solution in CFD and FEM.

It definitely is: engines these days are clearly having a bad time, but their accurate CFD simulation is an incredibly challenging and interesting task, because of so many scales and phenomena involved. The industry is demanding that meshing be fully automated, because making a good engine mesh can take days/weeks, and people’s time is always going to be more valuable than that of even the largest computer in the world.
