You can still make it work, but to get hold of the non-interoperable Fortran type you’ll need to introduce a typeless “handle” object:

I went through a similar solution at some point, but rejected it because data duplication was needed. But I didn’t get that in some cases it would be possible to allocate on the Fortran side before loading/generating the data on the C side (so no data duplication is needed), as you show here. Thanks.

gfortran is the only Fortran compiler I’m aware of that supports generation of the corresponding C prototypes .
